Prayer by Johanna Caton

Prayer

A silver morning, a shore cool and widening,
I watch the lowering tide, waves skim, slide

a whisper, a murmur, a hostess,
a curled hand: Come in, out,

hospitality of sea and sand.
Learn again today: tide

doesn’t need to be high, wild
surfable. Once dangerous, deep,

now tamed, low is sweet,
unveiling things never seen,

shells all gleaming.
