Testimonials & Praise

~ Testimonials & Praise for ONE ART ~

§

The sense of carefully curated abundance is a gift to the community.

§

Whenever I open ONE ART, I know that I’m going to read well written poems about things that actually matter. And your management of it is exemplary.

§

I value the community that has grown around ONE ART. The consistent online presence, the monthly readings, and the way poets continue to feel connected to the journal after their work appears there, make ONE ART feel like much more than just a poetry journal.

§

I look forward every day to reading the poem or poems published in ONE ART. I am never disappointed. There are poems on a wide variety of subjects, and I am always impressed by how beautiful, moving, powerful, and honest they are. These poems are eye-opening slices of life for me, and I appreciate the fact that they are imaginatively expressed, but accessible.

§

You have made this wonderful online venue for poetry where the reader can always expect to find something to feed the soul or tickle the imagination. I subscribe to a lot of poetry journals online, but none are as consistently excellent as ONE ART (with the possible exception of Rattle); I never read a poem on ONE ART and then say, Meh.

§

I love ONE ART because I know if I click to read a poem curated by Mark and Louisa, it’s going to be a good poem. For ONE ART, a fast turn-around on responding to submissions definitely does NOT mean a high acceptance rate or lower quality poetry. There’s magic happening somewhere because I don’t know how they do this.

§

Thanks to ONE ART, I have come to know so many poets whose work delights and engages me. I feel so grateful that 7 days a week, as I start the day, I can read ONE ART and see poetry that feels human and that carries the weight of being human. And somehow, this allows me to become more connected to the community of ONE ART readers and poets. The readings and workshops do as well. Finally, ONE ART curates poetry that has a sense of personal voice, or seems to value individuality. I feel a sense of awe for how the simple fact of setting down language on a page (also line, and use of blank space, etc), can be so expansive and carry almost unlimited opportunities to make meaning.

§

ONE ART combines consistently high-quality poetry and a distinctive editorial vision with a genuine sense of community. There is tremendous respect for the craft with no posturing. And a whole lot of kindness and heart.

§

ONE ART stands out among other journals for several reasons. First off, poets receive quick answers to their submission, and Mark promotes the published poems on social media. He also posts a list of the Top 10 poets read each month, and then the Top 25 for the year. It’s such an honor to be listed— it gives the poets recognition and encourages more readers of their work. The journal publishes well-crafted, readable poems that resonate with people, sponsors excellent virtual readings, and offers good quality and affordable workshops.

§

What I enjoy about ONE ART: being introduced to poets I would not have otherwise found. The voices you include are skilled, deep in their expression, and most of all, true and honest. There is a fine balance between academic poetry, which is often inaccessible, and poetry that relies too much on sentimentality without paying attention to craft. ONE ART chooses poems that embody the rigor and the tenderness of what a poem can be.

§

There’s so much to love about ONE ART. I don’t read much news anymore, but every morning without fail I read ONE ART, Rattle’s poem of the day, and George Bilgere’s poetry town. They are like my NY Times, WSJ, and USA Today. I love that ONE ART is such an inclusive journal publishing a range of voices from around the country, including those who have yet to publish books and those who’ve published a dozen or more. Plus, so many of my favorite poets are frequent contributors. It’s always a happy occasion when there is new work by Terri Kirby Erickson, Clint Margrave, Lynn Levin, or Robbi Nester to read, and many others.

§

Through ONE ART, I’ve been introduced to some of my favorite contemporary poets. Erin Murphy, Julie Weiss, Abby E. Murray, Marc Alan Di Martino, Betsy Mars, Donna Hilbert, just to name a few. There are countless more. I’m extremely proud to have my poetry in a journal with these amazing writers.

I’m a regular attendee of your workshops. They have been a real boon to my writing: teaching me revision tricks, providing me with new forms and helpful prompts. I don’t always make it in person, but I appreciate the opportunity to watch the recordings on my own time. In addition, their affordability allows poets of all stripes to take part.

§

An acceptance from ONE ART always feels like a win because I know Mark and Louisa are selective, critical readers.

§

I think what you and Louisa are doing is wonderful for poets and poetry. That you have such an amazingly fast response time continues to flabbergast me, but I think that’s my favorite part of ONE ART—knowing that what I’m reading hasn’t been stacked in somebody’s folder or lying in a heap on a desk for months.

§

I came late to ONE ART. Not sure why. And now am a devoted follower. I like the range of poems you publish, the accessibility, the focus on lesser-known as well as known poets. It’s always a surprise to open the ONE ART email. And I really like the community you foster by asking questions, joining in online conversations, contributing blurbs for new poets, etc. You have a generous, positive, online presence.

§

I appreciate the care you and Louisa put into my writing, and I’ve heard the same from other writers. That care shows up in your craft talks too: you actually listen to your guests and have a real conversation with them, rather than just running through questions. There’s a good range of craft and types of poetry represented, and I’m honored when you select my work to appear alongside writers I admire.

§

I so often LOVE the daily poems and save them, share them.

I appreciate the quick response after submitting my poetry, and the kind/direct/honest reply for acceptance or “not a fit”

I love the vibe of the community that gathers around ONE ART, very human/open/unpretentious.

I appreciate the monthly readings (I often watch on YouTube after the actual reading)

I appreciate the inclusiveness, feels more like a family than a clique, if you know what I mean.

I appreciate the back-and-forth conversation via email, the respect, the human-to-human, not holy-editor(s)-to-submitter.

I like the “Most Read” lists which are fun/interesting to read and even be on. 🙂

§

I enjoy the “most read poems” callout ONE ART offers. Granted I don’t like everything everyone else likes, it’s a quick way to get to the recent, best stuff quickly. It’s a goal of mine to be listed there someday.

§

ONE ART is a literary online journal that appears in my inbox on a daily basis. I look forward to receiving a poem or two daily, as every poem published in ONE ART is truly an art form. Mark and Louisa curate diverse voices and subjects. Daily, I am greeted with a plethora of truly fine poetry, and a good poem a day keeps the angst away. When submitting my own work for publication, ONE ART is my very first choice for many reasons. Primarily, I revel in the chance to be in the company of top-notch poets. Mark and Louisa will respond within a week, which is such a gift for a poet who doesn’t have to wait 6 months for a response.

And, I also had a very good experience working with Mark as he helped edit one of my poems to ensure it was polished for publication. ONE ART is a highly regarded journal within the poetry community, an honor that is well deserved.
