MY MOTHER IN MAY
As the crabapple blossoms
blazed pink and more pink,
she began her leaving.
As the lilacs and honeysuckle
began spreading their perfumes into air–
her fatigue deepening,
her steps slowing, the undetected
lesions in her brain burgeoning,
her conversation lessening
as if she needed to be still, listen
for another door opening
as the evening light kept lengthening.
