Self-Sovereignty by Anne Elizabeth O’Regan

It seems that everywhere
I turn these days there’s a promise
of life transformation.
I’m getting a little tired of it.

Even this cookbook promises
to “calm my mind and
transform my life.”

Please, all I want from you
dear cookbook is a recipe for
cauliflower soup. You needn’t
transform my life. Inspire
my taste buds? Sure. Put sparkle
into my noonday lunch? You bet.

I’d welcome that.

Anne Elizabeth O’Regan is from Boston, but recently bought a small cabin in the Maine Woods where she currently lives full-time with her cat Arjuna. She has written a book, Tamed. A City Girl Walks from Mexico to Canada on the Pacific Crest Trail ( and has been published in The Rumpus, Within Without, and other journals, as well as on NPR’s Poetry Sunday. She will be spending a month this spring at Storyknife, in Homer, Alaska as a resident writer.
