Saddest Factory by Tom Snarsky

Saddest Factory

Love, the place to be
my smallest self
without fear, is close
to the old factory
where they used to make
buttons—not the kind
you push to make
something happen,
but the kind you
turn sideways to
slip through a hole
& fasten. Lucky I
know that, since I don’t
have a map. It was told
to me by someone very
far away from us now,
Mars-far, but not
in a billionaire way
more of a ladies-and-
gentlemen-we-are-floating-
in-space kind of
way. The hot lie
of a Florida afternoon.
I don’t know, February
seems so distant
now too, like a remote
northern lake you’ve never seen
thaw, or known to.
