Two Poems by Marjorie Sadin

Knives

In the drawer
are spoons.
In the cabinet
are cups.
There is an organ
inside me. Some say
it holds love.
But I say it holds
knives that cut
me open like
a tomato
when I touch you.
Knives that
will slice me
like meat
when you die.
And knives that
will attack me
when I least
expect it.
Knives
that shine
in the organ’s
forever night.

Lovers’ Hands
after Georgia O’Keeffe “Hands and Horse Skull

One grasps a horse skull.
She is holding the skull like a pianist holding a chord.

She rests her fingers on the skull as if caressing her lover.

Her lover holds the bottom of the jaw which has the horse’s teeth.

Each receives the other’s caress without touching.

They are not afraid of death even though
death is between them.
