~ Current Events Poems ~

*Last Updated _ 5/6/25*

Update: More of a focus on Occasional Poems relating to holidays and celebrations. Less of a focus on polarizing political/news poems. There is space for both; however, ONE ART is probably not your ideal first stop for political/news poems. Try The New Verse News and Rattle: Poets Respond and Mobius: The Journal of Social Change and Poets Reading The NewsThese social justice-oriented spaces are good places to start.

Please indicate in the Subject Line of your email if your submission is time-sensitive (current events/rapidly approaching holiday).

Note: ONE ART is seeking work that will stand the test of time. With that in mind, we’re interested in poems that will resonate with readers beyond the initial news cycle.

Note: This is a separate category from standard submissions. Waiting 3-months between submissions does not apply here.

Please send Current Events Submissions to: oneartpoetry@gmail.com

Preference for concise free verse (but will consider formal poems that read in the manner of free verse)

Please refrain from simultaneous submissions as our typical response time is one to five days. (Please note that this is a preference. You will not be punished for sim subs.) Same day responses are common. Usually, we respond in three days. We do our best to respond within one week. If you have not heard anything after one week please reach out.

No previously curated work. What does that mean?

ONE ART will consider work that has previously appeared or is self-published on social media, a personal blog, forum, or message board, and poems that were recorded during a poetry reading or event. We do not accept submissions of work that has been previously curated (aka. published) in books, magazines, or similar sources that are publicly available.

ONE ART wishes to be the first publisher to highlight your poems, though we never want to discourage anyone from sharing their poems as they please. If a poem that has appeared on your blog is accepted for curation (aka. publication) in ONE ART, we ask that you revise your original blog post to note the publication.

It is ok if your work has been shared in an audio format previously, even if the event was recorded. We consider work curated (aka. published) in literary journal as audio (either alone or with text) as previously curated (aka. published).

Please query if you feel that your poem falls in a gray area of between sharing and publication.

ONE ART is intended to be a safe space for all. ONE ART values inclusivity and encourages submissions by poets who identify as being part of any marginalized group, Black, Indigenous, and people of color, poets who identify (privately and/or publicly) as part of the LGBTQAI+ community, neurodiverse poets, and poets with physical or mental health challenges.

We are always delighted to consider work by poets who are disadvantaged due to the many forms of social disenfranchisement as well as otherwise vulnerable populations in society both in the United States and Internationally.

ONE ART does not accept AI-created poetry. We will consider work that has been written with AI-assistance. What does this mean? Essentially, it means that we permit the use of AI in the process of brainstorming and development of poetry. We understand the desire to make use of AI in the creative process. That being said, we are disinterested in curating work that has not been created by humans. Sadly, yes, that means your dog and/or cat are not permitted to submit work either. If you are submitting AI-assisted work, then please indicate so in your Cover Letter.

Submissions are free.

Submissions to ONE ART should be emailed to: oneartpoetry@gmail.com

We encourage keeping your Cover Letter as simple as possible. Please mention if you are a previous contributor. Please include a 3rd person bio.

Want more information about submitting to ONE ART?

Check out this essay by Benjamin Davis (of Chill Subs). Ben unpacks ONE ART’s submission guidelines, contextualizes our guidelines, and compares them to other lit mag guidelines. It’s a fun and educational read! Plus, there’s a whole free course at Write or Die… so… Highly recommend.
